We now cross live to Laila Cunningham doing the media rounds to defend Nigel Farage.
We’re almost impressed by her willingness to step up and be publicly humiliated on a regular basis, as she bangs the Reform UK drum. There has to be a short straw involved, surely.
The LBC warm-up act
She chanced her arm against LBC’s Tom Swarbrick on Monday, and it was almost too brutal. Almost. LBC’s own account summarised the exchange with a simple scorecard: “Political campaigner ❌ Social media influencer ✅. Laila Cunningham repeatedly denies that ‘social media influencer’ Nigel Farage was ‘politically active’ when he was chairman of Reform UK.” The clip has already picked up hundreds of likes and well over a hundred replies, most of them pointing out the obvious problem with describing the chairman of a political party as somehow not politically active.
The Newsnight defeat
On Tuesday’s Newsnight, she wasn’t even a match for Hannah Spencer’s laugh, a moment that has already become one of the more widely shared political clips of the week. It capped off what has been a genuinely difficult run of appearances for Cunningham, who has previously been taken apart by Mick Lynch on the same programme, clashed with former police superintendent Leroy Logan over Farage’s “cold rage”, and been dismantled by Victoria Derbyshire specifically over Farage’s disappearing act following the £5m story.
Then came Channel 4
On Wednesday, she spoke to Channel 4’s Krishnan Guru-Murthy about Farage’s financial dealings. It went about as well as you’d expect after seeing her other efforts.
Cunningham made a specific and serious allegation live on air: “The National Crime Agency leaked one of our MP’s bank statements to The Guardian.” This connects directly to Richard Tice’s own allegation that the NCA had leaked his company’s bank statements and private conversations with his bank manager, a claim Tice raised after reporting linked a loan from his company to convicted fraudster George Cottrell.
Guru-Murthy simply asked: “What’s the proof?”
Cunningham’s answer did not exactly inspire confidence: “I don’t have it myself, you are gonna have to ask Richard Tice.”
That was, by any measure, not the response of someone confident in the allegation they had just made on national television.
The reaction
The clip spread rapidly on X. Jay, @JibbaJabb, posted the exchange verbatim with the caption “Absolute spoofers #c4news #reformuk #farage #clacton,” and it quickly picked up over 2,100 likes and 185 replies.
Narinder Kaur, @narindertweets, did not hold back: “Oh good lord..this woman has become a parody of a parody. Lost lost LOST! LC – The National Crime agency leaked one of our MP’s bank statements to The Guardian!!!!! KGT asks for proof. Miss New Sheriff in town – I don’t have it myself, you are gonna have to ask Richard Tice.” That post alone gathered 1,500 likes and 152 replies.
King, @King0243_PJC, made the comparison to her wider role in the party explicit: “Laila Cunningham out here gasping for air and fighting for her actual LIFE on C4 News. Serious allegation dropped. Evidence requested. Response? ‘I don’t have it, ask Tice.’ This woman is apparently the best Reform have for London Mayor.”
Socialist Opera Singer, @OperaSocialist, called it plainly: “Laila Cunningham being humiliated by @krishgm over her lies about Farage and his dodgy funding, is glorious,” a post that gathered 785 likes and 70 replies.
Others found the comedy in the specifics. ACR, @an_dy_moo_dy, riffed on the classic excuse format: “‘My boyfriend has the proof but he goes to another school, you won’t know him.'” John O’Brennan, @JohnOBrennan2, kept it simple: “She is having quite the day.” And Eddie Burfi, @EddieBurfi, raised the obvious question about Reform’s own media strategy: “Whoever is in charge of Reform’s PR must really hate them. Why else would they keep on letting Laila Cunningham anywhere near a media interview. She’s so bad. It’s objectively hilarious.”
Why this keeps happening
There is a pattern here worth naming. Cunningham has now been sent out repeatedly, across LBC, Newsnight and Channel 4 News, to defend increasingly specific and serious allegations, and has repeatedly been unable to substantiate the claims she makes on air. Telling a national broadcaster to go and ask a different politician for the evidence behind an allegation you have just personally made is not how credible political communication normally works, and viewers noticed that immediately.
This is not an isolated pattern within Reform’s broader media strategy either, with Robert Jenrick, Zia Yusuf and now Cunningham all struggling in broadcast interviews to defend Farage’s finances with anything more substantial than deflection, accusations of media bias, or, in Cunningham’s case, simply directing journalists elsewhere for the evidence.
Whether Richard Tice himself ever produces the proof Cunningham says he holds remains to be seen. Jay’s own follow-up post captured the mood well: “We expect Richard Tice will make that proof public any minute now. Aaaaany minute now…”
