To the studios of BBC Two’s Newsnight, where Reform UK’s Laila Cunningham was on duty to speak on behalf of Nigel Farage, who these days appears to prefer doing his talking via carefully edited video statements rather than live broadcast interviews.
Cunningham was defending Farage’s decision to resign as MP for Clacton so he can immediately stand again in the byelection he has triggered himself. Reform has been working hard to present the whole episode as a grand “people versus the establishment” showdown, and definitely not as an attempt to drag the conversation away from the £5m gift, the George Cottrell questions, the standards investigation, the property scrutiny and everything else currently following Farage around like a very expensive bad smell.
The line that changed everything
Then Cunningham said this: “Nigel’s been very honest.”
That was the exact moment Green MP Hannah Spencer appeared to experience what can only be described as a full-body reaction on behalf of the nation. She tried to keep it together. She really did. But her face said what millions of viewers were almost certainly thinking at exactly the same moment.
Why that particular claim was always going to be a problem
The difficulty for Cunningham is that “honest” is not the word most people would reach for first when summarising Farage’s recent conduct. He remains under formal investigation by the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner over an undeclared £5m gift from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne, a gift for which he has offered a series of shifting explanations, at various points describing it as covering his personal security, a reward for decades of Brexit campaigning, and, when pressed further, simply none of anyone’s business. The Sunday Times has separately reported that Farage failed to declare years of financial support from George Cottrell, a convicted fraudster who funded his security, staff and use of a London townhouse before he became an MP. Questions have also been raised about his undeclared property portfolio, with only two of at least five known properties appearing on his register of interests.
Against that backdrop, “very honest” is a genuinely bold word choice, and Spencer’s face registered exactly that.
The clip spreads
The moment quickly began circulating on X after Mark, @mrkphllps1, posted it with the caption: “OBSESSED with this reaction from Hannah Spencer #Newsnight.” He was far from alone in that reaction.
NoName, @vocalreasoning, summed up the obvious problem with Cunningham’s line: “‘Nigel’s been very honest.’ How can anyone keep a straight face with that comment.” Jack Robinson, @JackEORobinson, focused on the specific detail that made it funnier still: “it’s the immediate apology 😂” George, @Georgewhtv, wrote: “She tried so hard not to laugh 🫢” Matthew Ford, @warmatters, gave a fuller account of the moment: “Green MP Hannah Spencer literally laughed out loud at Laila Cunningham. It was such a funny moment! Laila struggled all programme but she collapsed after that 🤣”
ReallyFatiguedHuman, @HumanSoTired, kept their response short and, judging by the replies underneath it, deeply accurate: “She’s all of us.” UncleJoeJoe, @AntifaUncleJoeJ, argued Spencer had nothing whatsoever to apologise for: “Don’t ever apologise Hannah, it’s actually nice to hear a genuine emotion from an MP 😂”
Why an unscripted reaction cuts through so easily
There is a reason moments like this travel so fast and so far. Westminster broadcasting is, most of the time, a carefully managed performance: rehearsed lines, dead-eyed spin, and politicians on all sides pretending not to notice the enormous thing everyone else in the room can clearly see. When someone briefly drops that performance, even involuntarily, it registers as something rare and genuine, which is precisely why Spencer’s reaction spread so quickly and so widely. It wasn’t a prepared soundbite. It was simply what a normal person’s face does when they hear a claim that doesn’t match the facts they already know.
The bigger story sitting underneath the laugh
This is far from the only recent broadcast moment to challenge Reform’s preferred framing of Farage’s byelection. Victoria Derbyshire has already dismantled the party’s “anti-establishment” claim on the same programme, listing Farage’s private education, City career and billionaire-funded party as evidence he “couldn’t be any more establishment.” David Lammy made an almost identical argument at Deputy Prime Minister’s Questions, telling MPs Farage is “up to his neck in sleaze.” And Robert Jenrick’s own attempt to defend Farage on Channel 4 News collapsed under sustained questioning from political editor Gary Gibbon.
Cunningham’s Newsnight appearance fits neatly into that same pattern: a Reform spokesperson sent out to defend Farage’s byelection framing, running straight into a claim that simply does not survive contact with the facts currently sitting in front of the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner.
The verdict
So yes, when Cunningham said Farage had been “very honest,” Hannah Spencer’s face did the work of a thousand op-eds in about two seconds.
Apology not accepted, Hannah. It was 100% not necessary.
