Glasgow woman praised after confronting man accused of racially abusing student on bus

Passengers confront a man in a blue hoodie on a Glasgow bus as on-screen text reads: “Drunk racist man thrown off bus in Glasgow.”

A Glasgow woman has been widely praised after confronting a man accused of racially abusing a Chinese student on a city bus.

Footage of the incident shows several passengers intervening as the woman delivers an unmistakable message to the man:

“You are not welcome in the twenty-first century. Now, piss off!”

Other passengers then remove him from the bus, bringing the confrontation to an end.

The video was originally shared on Instagram by Jack Lu, a Chinese student studying medicine in Glasgow, who wrote:

“Racial abuse on a First Bus service in Glasgow AGAIN.”

It has since been reposted across X and other social platforms, where the woman’s response has been celebrated as an example of bystanders refusing to ignore racist abuse in public.

The precise date and route on which the footage was recorded have not been independently confirmed. There has also been no public statement establishing whether the incident was reported to Police Scotland or resulted in any further action.

Woman refuses to remain silent

The video shared by Jack Lu captures a tense exchange involving a male passenger described in posts sharing the clip as drunk.

Lu said the man had been subjecting him to racial abuse.

Rather than allowing the incident to continue, the woman challenges the passenger directly and tells him that his behaviour is unacceptable.

Her most widely shared line arrives as other people on the bus prepare to remove the man from the vehicle.

“You are not welcome in the twenty-first century.”

She then tells him to “piss off”.

Another male passenger appears to help usher the accused man towards the exit, while those nearby work to prevent the confrontation from becoming more violent.

Once the man has been removed, the woman can reportedly be heard dismissing him as a “silly wankjob”.

The moment has attracted attention partly because she does not hesitate or attempt to soften what she is saying. She makes it clear that it is the alleged racist, rather than the student being targeted, who is unwelcome.

Other passengers step in

The woman has emerged as the most memorable figure in the recording, but she was not the only passenger to intervene.

Others on the bus supported her and helped bring the incident to an end. One man assisted in removing the accused passenger, while another appeared to prevent the situation from escalating into a physical attack.

The clip was reposted on X by Mukhtar, who wrote:

“Big up this Scottish lady for standing up to this drunk racist, and to the lad who tried to kick him off the bus.”

The repost helped the footage reach a much larger audience.

What witnesses can do after racial abuse

Police Scotland defines a hate crime as an offence perceived by the victim or another person to have been motivated wholly or partly by hostility towards a protected group.

Its guidance makes clear that hate crime can include shouting, threats or verbal abuse and can take place on public transport.

Victims and witnesses can report a non-emergency incident by calling 101. Anyone facing an immediate threat should call 999.

Police also advise witnesses not to put themselves in danger while attempting to intervene.

In the Glasgow footage, passengers appear to challenge the behaviour collectively while trying to prevent the confrontation from escalating further.

There is no confirmation that Police Scotland has assessed this particular video, and a criminal offence cannot be treated as established solely from a clip circulating online.

The identity of the accused passenger is not publicly known, and he has not provided a response to the allegations.
