A Coventry food truck has been given a one-star hygiene rating by the Food Standards Agency and told to make “major improvements” following an inspection in March – but BoB Bites of Bliss is far from alone, with a string of city eateries from a well-known steakhouse to a post office receiving low scores from inspectors in recent months.
Inspectors visited BoB Bites of Bliss Limited on Stoney Stanton Road on March 10 and found a catalogue of concerns. Systems in place to ensure food served was safe to eat were found to be inadequate. Staff were said to have limited food safety knowledge. Bosses were told to improve food-handling practices including cooking, reheating, cooling and storage. Cleanliness did not meet hygiene requirements, and issues were found with some of the facilities needed to support good hygiene. Inspectors expressed doubt that food hygiene standards would be consistently maintained.
A spokesman for Coventry City Council said: “Based on the standards of food hygiene found during the inspection on March 10, BoB Bites of Bliss Limited received a food hygiene rating of 1, meaning major improvements were necessary. We have continued to work with the business to ensure that food safety laws are met, improvements are made, and the outlet is safe.”

The council added that improvements made following an inspection do not automatically alter the hygiene rating score. BoB Bites of Bliss can apply for a re-rating, or the score will be reviewed at the next planned inspection.
How the rating system works
The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, run jointly by the Food Standards Agency and local authorities, scores food businesses from zero to five. A rating of five means hygiene standards are very good. A rating of one – like that given to BoB Bites of Bliss – means major improvements are necessary. A rating of zero means urgent improvement is required.
Inspectors assess three elements: the hygienic handling of food, including preparation, cooking, reheating, cooling and storage; the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building; and the management of food safety, including the systems and procedures in place and the knowledge of staff.
In Coventry, all food businesses are inspected by Coventry City Council on behalf of the FSA. The council risk-rates businesses to determine how frequently they are inspected. Ratings are published on the FSA website and businesses are required to display them.
