Donald Trump has managed to turn what should have been a fairly routine G7 photo row into a full diplomatic incident, after telling an Italian broadcaster that Giorgia Meloni had “begged” him for a picture and that he only agreed because he “felt sorry for her.”
The Italian Prime Minister did not let that one go.
In a video posted to social media, Meloni called Trump’s version of events “completely made up” and said she was “frankly astonished” by the way the President had spoken about one of America’s closest allies. Her closing line was the one that travelled fastest: “I and Italy never beg.”
How it started
Trump reportedly told Italian broadcaster La7 during the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains that Meloni had been desperate for a photograph with him. “She begged me to take a picture with her. She wanted a picture with me so badly. I wouldn’t have taken it, but I felt sorry for her,” he is reported to have said. La7 aired a translated version rather than original audio, but the comments were widely reported across Italy and triggered an immediate backlash.
The timing made it stranger still. Only days earlier, footage of Meloni speaking to Trump at the G7 had gone viral, with the emphatic hand gestures prompting half the internet to conclude she was giving him a dressing down. Reports at the time suggested the exchange was more cordial than it looked – Meloni had reportedly told Trump “we have always been friends” during one G7 exchange. Trump then repaid that goodwill by telling a television station she had begged him for a picture.
Meloni’s response
“Donald Trump’s statements are completely made up. I’m frankly appalled,” she said directly to camera. She then widened the criticism beyond the personal slight. “I don’t know why the President of the United States behaves this way with his own allies – after all, it’s not the first time it’s happened.”
Then came the line that made the whole thing sting: “I can only say it’s a shame that he doesn’t show the same determination with the enemies of the West, with the enemies of the United States, with leaderships toward which he instead proves much more accommodating.”
That takes this from a silly Trump anecdote into something considerably more serious. Meloni was not just saying he lied about a photo. She was accusing him of being tougher on allies than on the enemies of the West – and doing so publicly, on camera, without hedging a word of it.
The diplomatic fallout
The response did not stop at one video. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani cancelled a planned trip to the United States in protest, calling Trump’s comments offensive not just to Meloni personally but to Italy as a whole. Senior Meloni ally Giovanbattista Fazzolari accused Trump of damaging historic US-Europe ties.
That criticism has been following Trump around throughout the G7 and beyond. His handling of Russia, Iran and America’s alliances with European partners has left governments trying to work out whether they are dealing with a partner, a problem, or both. A recent survey found that only one in ten Europeans now see the United States as an ally – a number that was already falling before this particular row.
For Meloni specifically, the comment was a particular kind of insult. She has spent years positioning herself as a serious Western leader rather than simply a populist ally of Trump’s. She attended his 2025 inauguration, cultivated access to the White House, and tried to act as a bridge between the European right and Washington. Being publicly patronised as someone who supposedly begged for his attention was not something she was ever going to absorb quietly.
How people reacted
Online reaction was swift. Andrew Desiderio wrote: “Holy crap. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni posts a video rebuking Trump, saying she wishes he showed the same determination toward countering ‘the enemies of the west.’ Comes after Trump claimed Meloni ‘begged’ for a photo at the G7. Trump and Meloni used to be very close.”
Yaroslav Trofimov wrote: “Meloni has had enough with Trump: I don’t understand why, not for the first time, he behaves this way with allies, while not showing the same determination and being accommodating to the enemies of the West and of the United States.”
Reggie B. said: “The next president will have to do a massive world apology tour. Trump has tarnished the relationship with our allies.” Sandip Mittal put it rather more simply: “Trump: ‘She begged me for a photo.’ Meloni: ‘Neither I nor Italy ever beg.’ Grandpa got cooked so hard even the pasta is overdone.”
Why it landed
Trump’s claim followed a very familiar template. Someone wanted something from him. Someone was desperate for his attention. He was reluctant but generous enough to oblige. It is the same self-flattering story structure he has used for years – only this time the person at the centre of it was a serving Prime Minister who had no intention of being cast in it.
Meloni’s response worked because she did not try to laugh it off or brush it aside. She addressed it directly, made it about national dignity rather than personal pique, and turned the original insult into a much sharper question: why does the President of the United States treat his allies this way while appearing far more comfortable with adversaries?
It is the same question other world leaders have been circling for months. Meloni just said it out loud, with her name on it, looking directly into the camera.
