Watch: Tense LBC exchange as Zia Yusuf rejects question about Farage and Russia

Shelagh Fogarty and Zia Yusuf on LBC.

A heated moment unfolded on LBC after presenter Shelagh Fogarty angered Reform UK’s head of policy, Zia Yusuf, by repeatedly asking whether Nigel Farage “is a Russian asset.”

The exchange followed the conviction of Nathan Gill, the party’s former leader in Wales, who was jailed for 10 and a half years after taking bribes from Kremlin-linked figures. Gill had held senior roles in Reform UK, Ukip, and the Brexit Party, working alongside Farage over several years.

The conviction prompted a wave of political commentary, including a swipe from Chancellor Rachel Reeves during her Budget speech. She joked about the government “freezing Russian assets” before adding:
“I don’t actually mean the Right Honourable Member for Clacton.”

❓ Fogarty Presses Yusuf: “Is Nigel Farage a Russian Asset?”

During Reform UK’s post-Budget round of media interviews, Fogarty pressed Yusuf with the question directly.

Is he a Russian asset?” she asked bluntly.

When Yusuf sidestepped the question, she repeated it:
Is Nigel Farage a Russian asset? Is he a Russian asset?

😡 Reform UK Chief Hits Back

Yusuf quickly became visibly irritated by the line of questioning.

“You know the answer to that question,” he said firmly. “And I take exception to you asking me that.”

He continued:
Are you seriously asking me if Nigel Farage is a Russian asset? That’s your serious question as the host of an LBC show?”

Labeling the idea “categorically not true,” Yusuf argued that even raising it was “deeply offensive to the millions of British people who support Reform and support Nigel Farage.”

🎧 Fogarty Refuses to Back Down

Fogarty pushed back just as forcefully.

“You cannot avoid questions about Nigel Farage,” she replied, “by suggesting that I’m somehow attacking people who are interested in voting for him.”

The tense back-and-forth has since prompted widespread discussion online, especially given the timing of Gill’s conviction and the renewed scrutiny of Farage’s political associations.
