Trump appeared at the Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas on Wednesday with noticeably fuller, more voluminous hair than he’d had just days before. He was there to promote his economic record and tax policies. Almost nobody watching cared about that part.
His usual comb-over looked considerably thicker and more bouffant than normal, setting off immediate speculation about a hairpiece. No evidence confirms he was wearing one, and Trump hasn’t said he was. That was never going to slow anyone down. Photos taken just days apart showed a genuinely striking difference, fuller and noticeably blonder in Las Vegas than the night before.
Then came the memes.
‘There is no freaken way that this is Trump’s real hair’
@krassenstein: “There is no freaken way that this is Trump’s real hair. NO WAY!” @atrupar, more restrained: “Trump’s hair, uh, has a lot more volume than normal.”
That was enough for the photo editors. @LucasSa56947288 produced an exaggerated version and asked: “Here’s Donald Trump’s new hairpiece! What you think? 🤣”
@sarrah_bellus offered him three completely different wig options under “Pick your fighter” — full Rod Stewart, a neat brunette bob, and something resembling a formidable grandmother’s hairdo.
Someone found a Golden Retriever
@Gr8CanadianFree turned his hair into what looked like a passing dog’s tail, captioned simply: “Anyone lose their Golden Retriever?”
@LorenzoTheCat went with a bird’s nest, complete with two birds sitting on top: “Because birds make everything better.”
@DocHalston skipped subtlety entirely and gave him a blond mane extending well past his shoulders: “Nothing to see here.”
@EastEndJoe posted the new hair next to a photo of Trump’s mother, Mary Anne MacLeod Trump, in a similarly imposing style. “Like mother like son.”
The before-and-after photos did most of the work
Some of the most shared posts weren’t edits at all. @Antunes1 just posted two photos side by side, taken roughly two days apart: “Trump’s hair, 2 days apart 💀” @marlenef4719 did the same and asked: “He has to know that we know he’s wearing a wig right?”
Still speculation, not fact. But the difference was striking enough to become its own story. By Thursday, back in the Oval Office, his hair looked much closer to normal again, which did absolutely nothing to slow the amateur investigations.
There are plenty of mundane explanations for hair looking different between appearances, styling products, lighting, colour, blow-drying, humidity, unflattering camera angles. None of that gives the internet nearly as much to work with as a presidential wig conspiracy.
This isn’t the first time his hair’s made news
Trump’s comb-over has been rearranged by strong wind boarding and leaving Air Force One more than once, occasionally exposing just how elaborate the styling actually is. @AZ_Brittney shared one of those windswept photos: “This is the guy making fun of other people’s looks.” Given how often Trump’s mocked opponents’, celebrities’ and journalists’ appearances, that turnaround probably explains why nobody feels much restraint returning the favour. @Bill43111 kept it short: “Trump’s new rug makes him look 30 years sillier.”
Nobody outside Trump’s immediate circle knows what actually happened in Las Vegas. No confirmation of a wig, hairpiece, or anything else. What’s certain is he walked onto a stage with considerably more hair than expected and accidentally handed the internet enough material for the weekend.
This is also the same president who spent last weekend flooding Truth Social with AI images of himself as a military commander, Elvis, and standing alongside Lincoln and Washington. After a week of artificially generated Trumps, the internet was probably unusually well prepared for another visually surprising one.
This time, at least, the photo was real. The hair explanation remains considerably less certain.
