Donald Trump has triggered a backlash from his own supporters after making unexpected comments about immigrant workers during a Fox News interview.
The former president, who built much of his political identity on strict immigration policies and an America First message, surprised his MAGA base by arguing the US needs to bring in more skilled foreign workers.
Speaking to Laura Ingraham on Fox News on Monday, Trump said America must recruit global talent to remain competitive, highlighting the H-1B visa system that allows companies to hire specialist workers from overseas. His remarks marked a notable shift in tone from his earlier calls to heavily restrict immigration and prioritise American labour.
Ingraham challenged him, suggesting the US already has enough skilled workers. Trump disagreed immediately.
“No you don’t,” he said. “You don’t have certain talents, and people have to learn. You can’t take people off an unemployment line and say, ‘I’m going to put you into a factory and we’re going to make missiles’.”

Trump’s comments quickly went viral, and many of his most loyal supporters expressed anger, shock and disappointment. To them, the idea of expanding H-1B specialist visas represents a direct contradiction of the America First message they have championed for years.
Anthony Sabatini, a well known MAGA commissioner, raged on X: “This is insane. We are going to lose the mid-terms so badly. We’ve never seen an administration crash and burn in its first year so badly, for no reason other than to appease donors and special interests.”
Right wing commentator Mike Cernovich added: “Trump broke everyone’s heart with this line about the American workforce and H-1Bs.”

Within MAGA circles, the H-1B programme has long been criticised for allegedly undercutting American workers. Critics argue the system enables corporations to replace US workers with cheaper foreign labour, particularly in the tech industry.
One furious user wrote: “Americans train their H1B replacements every day.” Another added: “H1B can also train their American replacement. Tell @realDonaldTrump America First means Americans first.”
For a movement built on economic nationalism, Trump’s latest stance felt like a betrayal.
