Kate Garraway challenges Suella Braverman over migration after she praises benefits her family received

Suella Braverman speaking to Kate Garraway on Good Morning Britain during a discussion about migration and her family's history.

Kate Garraway challenged Suella Braverman over her stance on migration during a Good Morning Britain interview after the former home secretary spoke warmly about how her own family benefited from movement around the British Empire.

Braverman, who is now with Reform UK, appeared on the ITV programme while promoting her memoir and discussed her family’s history, the British Empire and immigration.

She described the opportunities available to members of her family through Britain’s former imperial system and spoke positively about the impact those opportunities had on them.

After listening to Braverman’s account, Garraway cut in with four words:

“So you’re pro-migration?”

The question prompted laughter from Braverman, who then drew a distinction between historical migration within the Empire and the levels and forms of immigration Britain experiences today.

A clip of the exchange was shared by Good Morning Britain and quickly spread online.

Braverman talks about her family’s experience of migration

The exchange began as Braverman discussed her family’s background and her views on the British Empire.

Braverman has previously spoken about her parents’ migration to Britain and her own family history.

During the GMB discussion, she argued that members of her family had benefited considerably from the opportunities created by the Empire.

The interview then turned towards the wider question of immigration.

That is when Garraway stepped in.

If migration had benefited Braverman’s family, did that make her supportive of migration?

“So you’re pro-migration?” she asked.

Braverman laughed before making clear that her current political position was considerably more restrictive.

Braverman has built much of her political profile around immigration

Braverman served twice as home secretary under Conservative governments and repeatedly called for tougher controls on immigration and asylum.

She became particularly associated with attempts to stop small boat crossings and reduce legal migration.

Braverman later left the Conservatives and joined Reform UK, where immigration remains one of the party’s central political issues.

Her argument has generally been that Britain should significantly reduce immigration and exercise much greater control over who is allowed to enter the country.

That made Garraway’s intervention especially pointed.

Braverman had just described how movement through the British Empire had benefited members of her own family.

Garraway immediately turned that back on her.

The British Empire shaped migration to modern Britain

Braverman’s family story also sits within Britain’s wider post-war migration history.

The British Empire created political, economic and legal links across large parts of the world.

After the Second World War, those links played a major role in migration to Britain from countries including India, Pakistan and the Caribbean.

The British Nationality Act 1948 gave citizens of the UK and Colonies a shared citizenship status and helped shape post-war migration.

Those rules were progressively tightened in later decades.

Many families now firmly established in Britain arrived through migration routes linked to the Empire and Commonwealth.

Braverman’s point was that her family benefited from those historic connections.

Garraway’s question landed because immigration has since become one of the issues most closely associated with Braverman’s own political career.

The clip quickly spread online

The exchange prompted a lot of reaction after Good Morning Britain posted it online.

“Suella Braverman on GMB this morning, yapping on excitedly about how she LOVES the British Empire, how her cousin comes over as an immigrant and how her family all benefited blah blah

Kate Garraway quips “So you’re PRO immigration?”

Braverman laughs nervously “not today in…”

“I find this woman distinctively odd.

Singing the praises of what apparently made Britain great, but then in one fell swoop saying that simply doesn’t apply anymore 🤔

Well done Kate for the quick quip 👏”

@dukeofpeckham added:

“So she’s all for migration when it benefited her, her family, and her country of origin. When others want to do exactly the same thing in this modern day, it’s “illegal immigration””

“She is so pathetic

From a migrant family, she also benefitted from the EU and freedom of movement and Erasmus

She also blames the Tories when she was in charge of immigration…….”
